Meeting the Rising Demand for Transparency

Amidst the evolving trends, Amex recognized the exponential growth of online shopping. Sarkis Kalashian, the Vice President of American Express enterprise digital and analytics, stated, "Over the years, we have gathered feedback from both our card members and merchants, which highlighted the desire for greater transparency surrounding purchases. We understood the need to address confusion regarding the details of a card member's purchase and whether a dispute should be initiated. Particularly in the current COVID-19 era, where e-commerce purchases have surged, providing extensive purchase information has become even more crucial. We are excited to extend the Digital Receipts feature to make our customers' lives easier during these stressful times."

Accessing Detailed Purchase Information

The Digital Receipts feature, initially launched exclusively with iTunes/Apple, is now accessible to all Amex members. It enables members to view comprehensive transaction information, including the merchant name and logo, order number, date of order, item(s) purchased, cost details, and a merchant description. Members can conveniently access this information through the Amex App or on the American Express website.

The service is currently available for customers, and Kalashian stated, "We will continue to enhance these features based on ongoing research and validation with customers and merchants."

Enhanced Account Protection and Peace of Mind

Addressing concerns about digital footprints, Kalashian emphasized that Digital Receipts aims to provide customers with enhanced account protection and peace of mind. It helps customers distinguish between legitimate and fraudulent charges. Notably, the information displayed is provided solely by the merchant and/or Ethoca and Verifi to American Express. Amex maintains a commitment to ensuring the security, integrity, and confidentiality of the personal information processed.

Reducing Fraudulent Charges and Disputes

Fraudulent purchases are a significant concern for credit card owners. The Digital Receipts feature offers customers detailed information about their purchases, enabling them to identify legitimate charges and minimizing the need for calls to confirm transaction details or initiate disputes. Recent data from Amex Trendex indicates that 70% of US consumers have contacted their credit card companies regarding a purchase that they initially believed to be fraudulent or incorrect, only to discover that it was indeed a valid charge made by themselves or a family member.

Building Trust in Online Shopping

For merchants, Amex's new feature, which enhances accessibility to purchase details, can help build trust in online shopping. Kalashian expressed his enthusiasm, stating, "[More] than ever before, we understand the challenge of keeping track of purchases, whether made online or in-person. Digital Receipts offers a seamless solution to learn more about a purchase. Once customers expand the transaction details, they are presented with the option to view the digital receipt. Our goal is to create frictionless experiences and avoid overwhelming anyone. Therefore, we have developed clever integrations and an overall user-friendly interface. I find it quite fascinating that customers can now quickly find answers to their questions regarding a purchase and focus on what matters most in their lives."
